Hope for the Future
Last night, I went out to play chess with a local activity group, MEETinDC's games subgroup. There was a game night to play chess and Settlers of Catan (don't ask me, I've never played it). The event was at Teaism in Penn Quarter, at 8th and D NW. Most people were off playing Settlers - seems to be the rage among this subgroup. There was a man there with his two young children. Two boys, obviously mixed with something not white. Their skin was very fair, but slightly darker and more golden than their dad's. Their hair was curly, unlike their dad's. And their features were more round than their dad's. I thought they were both adorable little boys. They remind me of my own little boo-boos - my sister's two sons, and my brother's son. Beautiful, sweet, and full of life. They were 5 and 3 years old - precious. (as a side note, one of my boo-boos is turning 7 today! I will give him a call and sing a crappy rendition of Happy Birthday to him.) The older child already knows how to play chess. Amazing! He plays against the computer at home. He has a decent start, but hasn't grasped the end game very well. Well, me either! Sometimes. When I'm greedy, that is... ANYway, it absolutely warmed the cockles of my heart to see this kid playing at so young an age. I didn't learn how to play chess until my sophomore year in college! It's so embarrassing to suck at chess at my age, but I learned late in life and I don't play as frequently as I should. Nor do I study the game. Excuses... yeah, but I don't claim to be brilliant! I just have flashes of brilliance. And I wish I was truly brilliant. ANYway, his cute little face just crossed my mind again. I hope he turns out to be truly brilliant. He's got a fabulous start, from the way it looks.
