Buzzkill
Apparently, I am one! Haha! Or so I'm told, by my 14-year-old cousin this past weekend. Quick recap, I went home this weekend to a cousin's wedding. Lovely affair, simple and elegant, not too many frills. Just the right balance of pomp and circumstance. After the reception was over, a large bunch of my huge family congregated at one aunt's house. Said 14-year-old, another cousin (40) and myself were watching a rerun of Cold Case on tv. It's the end of the show, and the lead actress addresses her personal drama with her cute sometime-boyfriend (played by the delectable Josh Hopkins) after solving her case. She decides that she wants to be exclusive after getting disturbed by him dating another gal. The exchange is awkward, but ends up that they will become an exclusive item. She starts walking away to her car when he grabs her, spins her around, and kisses her passionately - the stuff of bad romance novels! The 40-year-old and I get a good laugh, namely when I crack on the realism (lack thereof, really, or just the bad acting at that part) of such drama playing itself out like that. We get an even bigger laugh when the 14-year-old girl whines, "You're such a buzzkill!" and effectively tells me to lighten up. Yeah, it is just tv. And I was certainly entertained! But if they really wanted to "get me," there was a way that they could have done it that would have been way sexier because it would have seemed REAL. If the show is going to take itself so seriously, it should at least be good and make every exchange seem real. But that's entertainment! :)
