This Is My Life.
I move among you A guarded entity unto myself I have many good qualities, many achievements But I am a sentinel, a soldier, solitary and waiting Keeping guard over my heart At times, I reach out And enjoy the company of others They see the veneer, one facet of me, maybe a few But do any of you really know me? Do you know what my fears are? Do you know what drives me? Can you feel my nervousness, perforated at times by flashes of courage or boldness? Can you feel my ache for a true connection, something real? So, like oil and water I float among you But never truly mix And at the end, we separate We may meet again But will you care enough to see past the veneer? We meet, we mix, we may laugh and share a bit Such an infinitesimal bit But then we separate And there I am Walking alone again to return to my home Feeling the gossamer connections slip through my fingers Like smoke and air Where I return to guard my heart Peering out and looking Watching and waiting for the one that will make me feel less alone Would you reach out to me, help me along? Give me the spark to inspire a flash of boldness? Maybe I should just learn to rule the world.
