The Bureau of Bureaucracy

Ever play SimCity? I didn't start playing until SimCity 4 came out, lured into playing the game by my ex. There is a building that becomes available once you reach a certain threshold of performance in the game, and it's hard to get - The Bureau of Bureaucracy. Pretty funny, right? I don't recall off the top of my head what you need to do to get the BoB without cheating, but you have to provide a huge amount of services to your large city before you can get it. Well, it occurred to me today that the sheer incompetence of the relief effort in New Orleans is attributable to the Department of Homeland Security, our very own Bureau of Bureaucracy. Life imitates art? DHS is our very own BoB and has shown itself for the joke that it is. Too bad that it's a tasteless joke. DHS is a redundant machine - why do we need this coordinating bureaucracy? FEMA - I used to have so much respect for them. Who the hell is coordinating this effort? What does it say about our country when you have reporters for Fox News showing the incompetence of our government? Watching that video of Geraldo and Shepard Smith cutting off those douchebags Hannity and Colms and telling it like it is... wow. What's disturbing? The people are locked in where they are, and can't walk across the interstate to get somewhere where they need help. There is no place to go to get information. They have maybe gotten supplies or medical aid once in six days. Geraldo and Shep tell you that. People are committing suicide where they are, a woman lays dead in her wheelchair... and the hopeful are trapped inside these hellholes. We did a better job bringing aid to the tsunami. Maybe that's because only DoD was handling the military assets, and NGOs didn't have to deal with FEMA/DHS' red tape. The Red Cross is having problems getting in because of the military control of access to New Orleans. WTF, people? I'm not going to lay the blame only on the federal government. The city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana were woefully unprepared. Granted, a lot of their resources comes from the federal government - so back to their feet again goes some of the blame - but there is no evidence of an actual PLAN other than "dump the people at the Superdome and the Convention Center." Okay, what then? It's pathetic to the nth degree. I hope middle America realizes that we aren't any safer with more "security" thanks to DHS and wakes up. It's time for a change. In the meanwhile...we have a frickin' squirrel keeping it real. (Not safe for work due to language content) I will disagree with Foamy on one point - the reporters on site showing what the hell is going on serve a purpose. They show the absolute ineptitude of what is going on, and hopefully it will be a wakeup call, a catalyst for change.
