Fair Trial
Please. The argument that Saddam Hussein can't get a fair trial because he won't sit down, shut up, and play by the Iraqi court's rules is utter hogwash. He is the reason he can't get a fair trial. Does anyone in the world think that Saddam Hussein is going to sit quietly in any court of law and therefore get a "fair trial"? Even if you changed the venue to the Hague, does anyone realistically think that his shenanigans in court are going to stop? In Saddam's eyes, he was removed illegitimately. Quite candidly, I agree. He therefore sees the court as illegitimate because he sure as hell would never have created it nor been a defendant. But that does not mean that his crimes upon his own people should go unpunished. There is no court of any jurisdiction that Saddam Hussein will respect except one where he is judge, jury and executioner. The tactic of his defense lawyers, by trying to blame the court for Saddam not getting a fair trial, is despicable. But I don't blame them since that's pretty much the only tactic they have - stall, smoke and mirrors. It's just a tremendous waste of time and money. Not to mention the prolonged anguish of the Iraqi people. That said, the trial should finish in its current venue, with the Iraqi people watching. The trial is for them, not us, and Saddam's hijinks shouldn't thwart it.

seems likely that whatever they do they will be wrong from some perspective. Part of me thinks this might have been better if the guys who found him came back to camp reporting he'd tried to flee and they had no choice...

Personally, I think his antics are hilarious.
He wouldn't get away with that crap in any other court on earth, but I absolutely love his theatrics.

David, I wish he was fleeing too.
Phil, that's just it - it's not like any other court is going to control him if he and his cronies stand up and yell some BS about not recognizing their legitimacy. They won't take it, and his goons will be removed - and the defense will still cry "unfair trial." It's crap. I'm all for the Court giving the defense an incentive to control their clients - you don't get a fair trial until you compose yourself in court.

Um, but didn't he kinda stay in power illegitimately? Seriously, what leg does he have to stand on to say that he was the legitimate murdering dictator.
Not that I am condoning invasion and all that, I'm just making the point that the time is now for him to sit down and shut up. History need not be the only judge.
