Admitted

I am now a member of the DC Bar. I've got two jurisdictions under my belt, and some flexibility for the future. Although at this point in time, I'm not ready to go back to DC... but I would if I felt that the job there was a push forward in my development. It's all about moving forward, not backward. I don't want to beat a hasty retreat. All this driving is making me tired again. I don't want to see 95... especially after I got busted this weekend for doing 90 in a 65 zone in northern Maryland. Ouch! $280 ticket. Bitches!! But at the same time, I'm just happy it's not a reckless driving ticket. I'll just pay the damn thing and be on my merry way... and I'll finally go get my NY state license tomorrow. I forgot one piece of documentation when I went the first time. Doh! Might come in handy now... maybe I can avoid the points!! :)

  • Congratulations on passing the bar. You gotta be proud of yourself. Sorry about the ticket! MD policemen along the I-95 corridor just suck as a rule.

  • Thank you, all!!

Just to be clear, I didn't take a separate exam. I did well enough on the multistate portion of the NY bar to get admitted into DC without taking DC's exam. DC is the only jurisdiction like that, I think. There may be others, but many of them require you to take the local section of their exam.

I'm done taking bar exams for a while. Hopefully forever!

  • Congrats, Siryn.

The only speeding ticket I've gotten outside of my home state was in Maryland. I was young, and decided to avoid paying the ticket, and take my chances on a warrant thinking "when will I be back in Maryland?"

Long story short I was forced to pay the ticket (very costly) and have probably been back to Maryland only once.

  • If you have to Albany for the swearing, try Southwest. When I got sworn in, they were running a special from BWI to Albany. $100 roundtrip!

  • Congrats on the bar exam. Before you pay the ticket, see if you can go to court and have the ticket taken off your record in exchange for going to driving school. You will pay court costs though, plus the driving school cost. You should be able to find this out from the officer that does the security at the courts entrance.

As I's sure the officer told you. Please slow down drive carefully so you can arrive back safe to keep these blogs coming.

    Good luck.

  • Yeah, DC is like that... just pay up the money and you're in. I've often plotted with friends over beers about how you might be able to get admitted to various states without having to retake the bar. DC often seems to be the trick.

For me, I would have to have five years of practice elsewhere, and be able to document it with business cards and what not to get in here without taking the bar. Its really a mental block... I wonder if I'll get in trouble for not taking it in July. See how I feel come february... I mean really... I wouldn't mind taking the essay part, it is just the stupid MBE that I'd have to still take again. Bugger.
